Carter takes me in his arms, heedless of the rule about distance between dance partners. The spotlight follows us out onto the dance floor. He gets a few polite chuckles, but there are a lot of blank stares, too.Ĭarter takes my hand and leads me down the steps. After that, everyone is welcome to join them on the dance floor and dance the night away! Have fun, be safe, and don’t do anything your parents wouldn’t approve of,” he tells them, shaking a finger at the assembled audience. “Now, ladies and gentlemen, the king and queen will have their first dance. I assure her I will, and turn back to watch the principal finish up the crowning ceremony. Since I’m going to be dancing, I give the girl the flowers back and she tells me to make sure I come get them before we leave the dance. Even luckier, since my class didn’t pick me, I don’t have to touch the microphone or give any kind of “thank you” speech. I do feel like a pretty lucky girl tonight. Carter leans in to whisper jokingly, “Why are you giving away all my secrets?”

But for thirteen-year-old Frank Drum it was a grim summer in which death visited frequently and assumed many forms. It was a time of innocence and hope for a country with a new, young president. The Twins were playing their debut season, ice-cold root beers were selling out at the soda counter of Halderson's Drugstore, and Hot Stuff comic books were a mainstay on every barbershop magazine rack. Yet I have never across the forty years since it was spoken forgotten a single word." A grace so ordinary there was no reason at all to remember it. WINNER OF THE 2014 EDGAR AWARD FOR BEST NOVELĪ SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL BEST BOOK OF 2013įrom New York Times bestselling author William Kent Krueger, a brilliant new novel about a young man, a small town, and murder in the summer of 1961. 5/9/2023 0 Comments Bloom the western canonAnd now “canon” has migrated from noun to adjective, giving the word thunder and muscle and curatorial certitude. “Battlestar Galactica” and “The Simpsons,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and the DC and Marvel universes - they’re canonical, too. That consecration has spread from academia to, say, Reddit, where fans gather around movies, TV dramas, video games and comic books the way the academy threw its weight behind Dostoyevsky, Joyce, Faulkner and Updike. Traditionally, the people drawing up our cultural canons have been an elite group of scholars and critics who embraced a work of art and sent it aloft to some deifying realm. It’s Jane Austen, the Beatles, Miles Davis, Andy Warhol and Beyoncé. That is, of course, what a canon is - a settled matter. It places a work, a person or an idea beyond reproach. The phrase didn’t originate on the internet but is of the internet and its wing of antidiscursive discourse. You need not only to certify it but also to forestall decertification. You need to dome it under a force field so that other people’s grubby hands, opinions and inferior fandoms can’t stain or disrespect it. You need to take that thing, wrap it in plastic or put it on a pedestal. You have to take that thing - album, author, song, movie, show - and do more than love it. Sometimes, it’s not enough to love something. 5/9/2023 0 Comments Eugene rhinocerosHailed as an early example of Theatre of the Absurd, Eugene Ionesco’s Rhinoceros is an allegory that warns of the dangers of nationalistic fervor, mob mentality, and the rise of destructive political forces. As Berenger watches his world descend into the chaos of the stampede, he is faced with the moral dilemma of his own identity in the face of societal decay. Berenger realizes that the rhinoceroses are their neighbors, coworkers, and friends some villagers are skeptical of the phenomenon, while others feel that they have no choice but to join them. As time goes on, more rhinoceroses appear. But their meeting is disrupted by a rhinoceros thundering through town, drawing onlookers and speculation about how the pachyderm-whether with one or two horns, whether an Asiatic or African rhinoceros-got there. Rhinoceros begins in a small town square where Jean, an efficient, refined young man, meets his semi-alcoholic and fully apathetic friend, Berenger, for a drink. Jean, well-manicured and poised, tries to help his friend. Berenger is unkempt, admitting that he drinks too much and often feels fearful. In a provincial French village, Berenger and his friend Jean meet at a local cafe for a Sunday afternoon drink. About the Book In Rhinoceros, as in his earlier plays, Ionesco startles audiences with a world that invariably erupts in explosive laughter and nightmare. 5/9/2023 0 Comments The time machine novelI liked holding it, almost as much as reading it. It feels like a good, solid comic book to keep or a hardy gift that one could be proud to give. What a great idea - to illustrate the Classics! Also, the book itself is printed on strong paper, so it feels thick/substantial for a comic book, it is nicely bound, and the cover and pages have such a great feel. (The book references their website, so I will be checking that out to find more). I am so excited to have learned about this Campfire imprint, and I will look for more from their Classics collection. I bought it to read and to pass along to my nephew. I was fully immersed, excited, and transported while reading this book. I LOVED this!! The illustrations, beginning with the front cover, and throughout every page, dazzled me. READERS ARE LOVING THE CORDWAINERS!
